As well as showing that well over half of the U.S. population recognize the name of the top crypto when it is presented to them, Coinbase's research also indicates that 37 percent of Americans have heard of the concept of 'cryptocurrencies', naming Bitcoin as an example without any prompts.
The data (which is primarily taken from a 2018 YouGov poll and combined with macro analysis of Coinbase user activity, as well as other publicly-available sources) gives a detailed breakdown of the level of crypto awareness and ownership in different states of the U.S. Wisconsin and Utah have the highest level of unprompted awareness of crypto, with around 57 percent of their populations able to proactively name Bitcoin.
Alaska was the state with the lowest unprompted awareness of Bitcoin, at just 18 percent. However, it also placed 8th out of the 50 states in terms of what percentage of its population had invested in BTC. The top 5 were California, New Jersey, Washington, New York, and Colorado. When the average USD amount invested in crypto per person is measured, Delaware takes the top spot, with Nevada in third place behind California.
Other key figures are related to Google searches for Bitcoin. Residents of Nevada have typed Bitcoin into Google more than those of any other state, with Hawaii in second place. In late June, American users typed 'Bitcoin' over three times more often than they searched for 'Kim Kardashian'. Bitcoin has also been Googled more times over the past year than 'the Royal Wedding', or 'election results'.
